This panel discusses the role of tourism in rural development of developed and developing countries. Its needs and priorities for expansion depend on the flexibility of tourism planning and on the action of policymakers and local governments. In the case of rural tourism development, community involvement and empowerment are preconditions for sustainability. Speakers from Japan and Europe will share their views on rural resource management for tourism development, with the goal of also bridging theory and practice in this field. The panel will feature model case studies form Japan and other East Asian countries covering national and international practices of rural development through tourism.
